Equal Voice Congratulates Prime Minister Carney and Calls for Continued  Progress on Gender Equity

May 6, 2025 – OTTAWA, ON – Equal Voice congratulates Prime Minister Mark Carney on his election  victory and the formation of Canada’s next government. As a multi-partisan organization dedicated to  advancing gender equity in Canadian politics, Equal Voice underscores the ongoing need for meaningful  action to ensure Canada continues to make progress toward gender equity in political representation.

Following the 2025 federal election, the representation of women and gender-diverse Members of  Parliament (MPs) by party is as follows:

  • Liberal Party: 68 out of 169 MPs (40.2%)
  • Conservative Party: 26 out of 144 MPs (18.1%)
  • Bloc Québécois: 5 out of 22 MPs (22.7%)
  • New Democratic Party (NDP): 4 out of 7 MPs (57.1%)
  • Green Party: 1 out of 1 MP (100%)

These results bring the total proportion of women and gender-diverse MPs in the House of Commons to  30.3%, representing a slight decrease from 30.5% in 2021.

In the previous federal election (2021):

  • Liberal Party: 57 out of 160 MPs (35.6%)
  • Conservative Party: 22 out of 119 MPs (18.5%)
  • Bloc Québécois: 12 out of 32 MPs (37.5%)
  • New Democratic Party: 11 out of 25 MPs (44.0%)
  • Green Party: 1 out of 2 MPs (50%)

“This election has made it clear that progress is fragile,” said Lindsay Brumwell, Interim Executive  Director of Equal Voice. “We cannot take representation for granted—gender equity in politics requires  continued commitment and action from all parties. Canadians deserve a Parliament that reflects the full  diversity of our country.”

Systemic and societal change begins with leadership. A dedicated seat at the cabinet table for women  signals that inclusive policy matters. We encourage all political leaders to recognize the capabilities and  expertise of women as essential to shaping the solutions Canada needs, now and into the future. Equal  Voice urges the Prime Minister and the entire Parliament to ensure women’s contributions are valued at  the highest levels of decision-making, across all government priorities and opportunities.

Equal Voice is committed to ensuring that women and gender-diverse individuals are not only elected but positioned to lead and thrive. Through education, mentorship, research, and network building, the  organization supports long-term change in Canada’s political landscape.

About Equal Voice: Equal Voice is a registered charity dedicated to improving gender representation in  Canadian politics through research and education. Since 2001, Equal Voice has been at the forefront of  advocating for equal representation of women and gender-diverse individuals in Canada's Parliament,  provincial and territorial legislatures, and municipal councils.
