International Women’s Day will always be one of my favourite annual celebrations. It’s an important occasion to look back at the successes and gains made to advance gender equity and reminds us of the important work that lies ahead.
Equal Voice is a national, bilingual, multi-partisan charity that — since 2001 — has been advocating for the equal representation of women in Canada’s Parliament, in provincial and territorial legislatures, and on municipal and band councils.

A personal and professional reflection: a year ago today, I stepped into my dream role at Equal Voice. Our work at Equal Voice is to elect, support and retain women and gender diverse people in Canadian politics. As a lifelong champion of women’s leadership and democracy, I could not have imagined a better place to show up to every day.
Here are some lessons that have emerged for me over this past year – that I’ll continue to carry forward.
For the third year, the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation – also commemorated as Orange Shirt Day – has been observed on September 30. For some Canadians, this may be a controversial holiday. However, I believe that if each and every Canada resident take a moment to consider how this day, and the reason for it, impacts Indigenous people in Canada, anyone can see its importance.
This week, when MPs return to the House of Commons, they’ll have some urgent business to attend to. With the resignation last week of the previous speaker, there are a number of MPs who have decided to seek out the role of Parliamentary referee.
The Equal Voice Foundation mourns the passing of a Canadian trailblazer Dr. Rosemary Speirs, distinguished feminist activist, journalist, nature conservationist, philanthropist, and founding Chair of Equal Voice.
