March 8, 2026 – TORONTO, ON – On International Women’s Day, Equal Voice is reaffirming its commitment to advancing gender equity in Canadian politics and strengthening women’s representation at every level of government.
While women make up roughly half of Canada’s population, they currently hold just 30 per cent of seats in the House of Commons, highlighting the continued disconnect between representation and reality in Canadian politics. While the country has made meaningful progress over the past decades, women remain underrepresented in political institutions nationwide. This imbalance underscores the continued importance of the work Equal Voice is doing to support and advance women and gender-diverse people seeking leadership roles in politics.
International Women’s Day is both a moment to recognize the women who have shaped public life and a reminder that sustained effort is required to ensure leadership reflects the diversity of the country.
“When women participate fully in political life, our institutions are stronger and our democracy is more resilient,” said Lindsay Brumwell, Interim Executive Director of Equal Voice. “International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate progress, but also to acknowledge that representation requires continued action – from political parties, from institutions, and from all of us as individuals.”
Research consistently shows that gender-balanced leadership improves decision-making and greater public trust. Yet systemic barriers – including recruitment practices, limited access to political networks, caregiving responsibilities, and safety concerns – continue to impact who sees politics as accessible or attainable.
Equal Voice works year-round to help address these challenges through leadership training, mentorship, and national advocacy efforts designed to support more women and gender-diverse individuals in pursuing public office.
To mark International Women’s Day, Equal Voice will bring together leaders in Toronto on March 13 for a discussion highlighting the role women play in shaping public policy and strengthening democratic institutions.
International Women’s Day is a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come and to look ahead to the progress that remains. Equal Voice continues to work with leaders, advocates, and communities across the country to build a political landscape that strengthens Canada’s democracy from coast to coast.
