Ottawa: Equal Voice is pleased to announce that Eva Aariak, former Premier of Nunavut, is the 2014 recipient of the prestigious EVE Award. Ms Aariak will accept the award on Thursday September 25th, 2014 while in Prince Edward Island, during a lunch hosted by Equal Voice in her honour as part of A Bold Vision: Women's Leadership Conference.

“Eva Aariak’s vision for Nunavut and her leadership in critical discussions on the project of nation-building have resonated with women across the political spectrum in Nunavut and beyond,’” said Raylene Lang-Dion, Equal Voice’s National Chair. “We are delighted to partner with A Bold Vision: Women’s Leadership Conference in celebrating Canada’s fifth female Premier.”

In October 2008, Eva Aariak became the only woman elected to Nunavut’s 17-seat Legislative Assembly. In November 2008, she was chosen by her peers in the legislature as Nunavut’s first female Premier. Prior to her election, Aariak served as Nunavut’s first Languages Commissioner where she worked to ensure that Inuktitut and Inuinnaqtun were the working languages of the territorial government. Her career has also included working as a CBC Radio Reporter, serving as President of the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce and Chair of the Nunavut Film Development Corporation.

“Through Eva Aariak's achievements, young women across the country have seen that women are strong and are shaping the world in which we live,” said Kyla Ronellenfitsch, Equal Voice’s National Youth Chair “Inspiring young women to believe they are capable of reaching similar heights and making a positive impact is one of her many great legacies."

Eva Aariak will be the 14th recipient of Equal Voice’s EVE Award since its inception in 2006. Other recipients include the Right Hon. Kim Campbell, Premier Kathleen Wynne, Hon. Anne McLellan, Hon. Leona Aglukkaq, Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath, as well as Green Party leader Elizabeth May.
