Nomination of Women Candidates on the Rise

Ottawa:   As the federal election campaign kicks off, an analysis by Equal Voice shows that most federal parties are nominating more women than in previous elections, although fewer are running in winnable ridings.

At the election call, there were 68 women in the House of Commons, or 22 percent, putting Canada in 52nd place according to the Inter-Parliamentary Union which ranks countries by the number of women in their national legislatures.

To date, with the majority of candidates for the major parties already chosen, overall nominations of women by the parties have improved.  The Liberals, New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois have nearly reached or exceeded Equal Voice’s target of one third women, although the Liberals have yet to meet their 2008 record of 37 percent.  A total of 24 percent of confirmed candidates for the Conservative Party are women, up from 20 percent women candidates in the last election. The Green Party is running 30 percent women, up one point.

“Equal Voice is pleased to see that parties are making progress. This translates into many more women standing for election – something that is fundamental to the health of Canada’s democracy.  It also underscores that women are by no means turning their backs on the political process,” said Nancy Peckford, Executive Director.

However, despite this improved performance, many female candidates are still facing likely defeat in ridings where their parties did poorly last time.

Only the Bloc Quebecois is running more than one third women, approximately 36 percent, in competitive ridings.  The New Democrats and Liberals are nearly on par with close to 30 percent and 27 percent women, respectively, in potentially winnable seats for their parties.  The Conservatives have nominated 36 women       (20 percent) in their most competitive 179 ridings.
