Ninety Years after the Election of the First Female MP, Equal Voice Seeks to Change the Game for Women in Politics

OTTAWA:  On Thursday March 10th & Friday March 11th, Equal Voice, a multi-partisan organization promoting the election of more women, is inviting supporters, elected representatives, members of the media, academics and young women to a national conversation, Leveraging Women’s Leadership for the 21st Century: Changing the Game.  

 

The conference will be hosted at the Government Conference Centre in Ottawa, ON and will also be live webcast by ISI Global via Equal Voice’s website at www.equalvoice.ca.

Marking Equal Voice’s tenth anniversary, the summit will feature six panels:

 

-          Deep Roots, Strong Wings: Promoting the Participation of First Nations, Métis and Inuit women

-          Tales from the Brink: How to Win a Nomination/Succeed on the Campaign Trail

-          Are Women Framed to Falter?: Reflections on women and the media

-          The Culture of Power and Politics

-          How to Have a Life (or Save it) while in Politics

-          Doing it Differently (and Why It Matters)

 

A youth forum, Young Women Demand an Equal Voice, bringing together approximately 100 young women, will close the Summit.

 

Keynote Presenters include: the Hon. Rona Ambrose (Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women), Trine Skei Grande (Leader, Liberal Party, Norway) and Jennifer Lawless (Director, Women & Politics Institute, American University).

 

Speakers include: the Hon. Lisa Raitt; Minister of Labour; HE Mohau Pheko, South African High Commissioner; the Hon. Sheila Copps, former Deputy Prime Minister; Janet Ecker, former Ontario Minister; Martha Hall Findlay, MP; Michael Chong, MP;  Lisa MacLeod, MPP; Jean Augustine, former federal Minister; Penny Priddy, former  MP and BC Minister, and Marie Wilson, Commissioner, Truth and Reconciliation Commission.  

 

National Recognitions Reception:

On Thursday evening, March 10th. 2011 from at 5:30 p.m., Equal Voice will also honour ten women and three men who have been pivotal to paving the way for women in politics.   

 

Those being honoured have served as prime ministers, premiers, ministers, political party and/or government leaders, a First Nations chief and Senators.

Elaine McCoy, Former Alberta Minister; The Hon. Alexa McDonough, Former Leader, New Democratic Party; The Hon. Lucie Pépin. Former MP, Senator; Penny Priddy, former MP and BC Minister.
