Equal Voice Salutes New Brunswick’s 71: Record number of women running in 2010 Election

Sep 09, 2010

New Brunswick – The official deadline for nominations for the September 27th election has passed and Equal Voice New Brunswick (EVNB) is thrilled that 71 women are running for a seat in the NB Legislature.
“We have always said that a key factor to having more women in the Legislature is getting more women on the ballot,” says Lisa Merrithew, Chair and Founder of EVNB. “These numbers speak to the courage of the candidates and the commitment of the parties to recruit more female candidates. But I also think it speaks to the public’s appetite for more gender balance in New Brunswick politics,” says Merrithew.
All parties increased the number of women on the ballot over the last election:
Liberal – 12 women out of 55 candidates. (10 female candidates in 2006)
PC – 14 women out of 55 candidates. (8 female candidates in 2006)
NDP – 17 women out of 55 candidates (15 female candidates out of 48 candidates in 2006)
Green Party – 23 women out of 51 candidates (NA in 2006)
People’s Alliance Party of NB – 5 women out 14 candidates (NA in 2006)
The Liberal Party, PC Party and NDP have answered the challenge and increased the number of female candidates over the 2006 roster. This is the first election for the Green Party of NB and while just shy of the 50% mark; their efforts to recruit women are both exciting and admirable. PANB is also offering candidates for the first time in this general election and has been successful with 36% of their candidates being women.
“Part of our mission was to spark a discussion around the fact that New Brunswick was trailing the nation in terms of female representation and apply pressure to the political parties to actively try to reverse the trends,” says Merrithew.   “While our ultimate goal is to have half of the seats in the legislature held by New Brunswick women, we believe having 71 women on the ballot is a huge step in the right direction,” says Merrithew.
EVNB thanks all of the women for stepping up and standing for public office. We salute you, wish you luck and look forward to you taking your seat in the Legislature.
