EQUAL VOICE AIMS TO BOOST CANADA’S INTERNATIONAL RANKING: Women in Canada’s National Capital encouraged to Participate in Series of Local Discussions
Mar 02, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA – In anticipation of International Women’s Day on March 8th, 2010, Equal Voice announces the launch of “Particip8,” which is the first of several gatherings being held throughout Canada’s National Capital Region to encourage local discussions surrounding women in politics.
The campaign has been developed in light of recent statistics indicating that Canada’s international rank with respect to the number of women in elected office has not improved significantly.
Equal Voice’s National Capital Region (EV NCR) chapter has spearheaded “Particip8,” which includes eight breakfasts or dinners, cocktail hours or coffee breaks, to be held simultaneously at 8:00 a.m. or 8:00 p.m. on March 8. This initiative is being released as part of a broader action campaign entitled “Be Her or Support Her,” that is to be launched later in the year.
“We are launching the series on International Women's Day, but it is our hope that the 8 at 8:00 model will run continuously,” says Sherri Moore-Arbour, Equal Voice’s NCR Chair and founder of the initiative. “We’re excited to reach deeper into our community through members and supporters, staying connected with women on the ground.”
“We're starting in Ottawa, but we look forward to making Particip8 a national program.”
Supporters who are not hosting their own events are encouraged to join Equal Voice on March 8th at “The Wellington,” located at 1325 Wellington Avenue, Ottawa, at 8:00 p.m. for EV NCR’s dinner.
Additional resources and background information will be available on the Equal Voice Website shortly.
Established in 2001, Equal Voice is an organization dedicated to promoting the election of more women to political office in Canada. According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Canada currently stands in 49th place out of 189 parliamentary nations.
