Equal Voice Launches its Québec Chapter

On the heels of Hillary Clinton’s loss in the U.S. Presidential Election Equal Voice launches a Québec Chapter to

Spur Action on Gender Equality in Politics

(November 11, 2016, Montréal, QC) This week, Equal Voice (À voix égales) officially launched a Québec chapter during a gathering in Montréal.

As a national multi-partisan organization dedicated to the election of more women, Equal Voice was pleased to welcome Members of Parliament, past elected officials, journalists and prominent business leaders from all political stripes.

“Concerns over gender equality span our entire country,” said Nancy Peckford,  Executive Director, Equal Voice.  “With only 29 percent of seats in the Assemblée nationale currently held by women, there is obviously more work to be done to achieve gender parity. The same holds true for legislatures across the country.”

“I am ecstatic that Equal voice now has a chapter in Québec,” said Anju Dhillon, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Status of Women and Member of Parliament for Dorval—Lachine—Lasalle.   “The movement for gender equality in Québec and across Canada has become even stronger thanks to their tireless dedication.”

Equal Voices recognizes the leadership of key groups in Quebec including Groupe Femmes Politique et Démocratie (GFPD) and is committed to supporting their efforts.

“GFPD has been instrumental in inspiring and equipping women to run and win in Québec, especially municipally and provincially”, noted Québec senior liaison Catherine Fortin LeFaivre.  “That is why we are thrilled to be partnering with this organization to bring Equal Voice to Québec. By doing so, we will both benefit in sharing best practices, and in leveraging our organizations’ strengths to meet a common goal of gender parity in politics.”

Equal Voice also recognizes the importance of partnering with the private business sector, and especially those organizations that promote and enact gender equality.

“On behalf of Hill + Knowlton Strategies, I am proud to partner with Equal Voice on this significant event, which promotes the importance of female leadership in Québec,” said Nathalie Bourque, Hill+Knowlton Strategies President for Québec. “The more women have influential roles in society, the more they will be inspired to seek leadership positions in politics and business. Women’s leadership styles make a major positive difference for all organiztions. ”

Elected officials  at the event included : Anju Dhillon, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Status of Women, and M.P. for Dorval—Lachine—La Salle; Thomas Mulcair, NDP Leader and M.P for Outremont;  Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet, NDP Whip and M.P. for Hochelaga; Marc Miller, M.P. for Ville-Marie—Le Sud-Ouest—Iles-des-Sœurs, as well as Danie Deschênes, Mayor of Notre-Dame-de-l’ile-Perrot.

Under the banner of its national Daughters of the Vote initiative, Equal Voice is bringing 78 young women from Québec, one from every federal riding in the province, to Ottawa on International Women’s Day 2017 to mark the 100th anniversary of some women in Canada being granted the right to vote.  In Québec, however, it would take another 23 years for women to be granted the right in Québec elections.
