Equal Voice Launches Daughters of the Vote: Marking History to Inspire Future Generations of Women Leaders

Apr 12, 2016

Ottawa: As part of the lead up to Canada’s 150th celebrations in 2017, Equal Voice is launching a national initiative, Daughters of the Vote, to recognize a significant event in Canadian history: The 100th anniversary of the first voting rights for a select number of Canadian women granted in 1916.

Equal Voice is inviting young women, ages 18-23, to apply to participate in a national initiative in which 338 women, one from each federal riding, will be selected to take their seat in Parliament, literally The women will meet and hear from outstanding women leaders from every sector.

Who will lead the country into its next century? Daughters of the Vote is an initiative to identify and encourage young women who will answer that call.

“Equal Voice is excited to extend this invitation to inspiring Canadian young women who, up to now, may have had very little experience with politics. Our goal is to introduce the political process to young women and for them to recognize and strengthen their own skills and talents in order to enact change.” said Nancy Peckford, National Spokesperson for Equal Voice.

Observing provincial and territorial events throughout 2017, the women will represent their communities in a culminating leadership forum on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, March 6-8th 2017.

“This is an opportunity to interact with and learn from 338 diverse and dynamic young women who represent Canada’s rich indigenous, ethno-cultural, linguistic and regional heritage said Denise Siele, Director of Stakeholder and Community Relations.

“ On behalf of Equal Voice, I would like to thank our generous sponsors: Canadian Heritage, Johnson and Johnson Family of Companies, TD Bank, Air Canada and The Egg Farmers of Ontario who have given financial support and in kind-donations to help make this a reality.” said Lynne Hamilton, EV National Chair.

Applicants are invited to apply online at www.daughtersofthevote.ca between April 15 to June 15, 2016.
