Politicians of All Stripes Wear Equal Voice T-shirts on March 8th to raise awareness… ‘because it’s 2016’

Mar 08, 2016

OTTAWA, ON:

Equal Voice (EV), Canada’s national organization to help elect more women, has launched a savvy nation-wide awareness and fund-raising campaign on International Women’s Day -- with the support of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other notable politicians and celebrities.

The first of many “selfies of support” being released over the next three weeks is that of former Prime Minister Jean Chretien.

“What better time to draw attention to how far we’ve come – and how far we still need to go - than on a day that is nationally recognized as an opportunity for the country to show its support for women,” notes Lynne Hamilton, Chair of Equal Voice.

To highlight the issue, Equal Voice has produced a limited run t-shirt with the tag line: “ … because it’s 2016”, suggesting that the time has come to close the gap between men and women MPs in the House of Commons.

The back of the t-shirts notes: ‘ … 100 years in the making’ -  pays tribute to the year that some women in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta  won the right to vote.

Selfies of politicians and community leaders sporting the t-shirts will be circulated nation-wide on social media over the three week campaign that will, eventually, involve Canadians across the country. Equal Voice invites politicians of all stripes and Canadians from coast to coast to coast to join the campaign by purchasing and wearing the t-shirt between International Women’s Day, March 8th  and the campaign finale on March 29th.

“As one of the only countries in the world with a gender-balanced federal Cabinet, Canada now stands out for this bold move,” added Nancy Peckford, Equal Voice National Spokesperson.

“But with just 26-percent of women MPs in the House, there is so much more to do if we are to achieve parity in Canada’s Parliament. At the current rate of progress, women will have to wait 90 years before they are equally represented in the House.”

Currently, 250 male MPs serve in the House and just 88 women.  50 of those serve in the governing caucus, a historic high.

Equal Voice’s social media campaign will encourage women and men to share photos of them ordering the t-shirt to show their support.

Funds raised will support EV’s national initiative, Daughters of the Vote, which will bring 338 young women to Ottawa next March for an ground-breaking leadership summit on political and social equality.
