Sharmila Setaram

My name is Sharmila Setaram and my personal contribution to social change is a commitment to the empowerment of marginalized communities. Specifically, creating opportunities for girls and women to develop their leadership skills, take on leadership roles, find mentors, and feel equipped to participate in decision-making bodies – wherever they may be, whether in the workplace, a volunteer organization, a union environment, or running for political office.

Most recently, I am the Former President of the Board of Directors at Amnesty International Canada (English Branch), a role I held for three years, and served on the Board for a total of six years from 2010-2016. Amnesty Canada is part of a global movement of over 7 million people in more than 150 countries working together to protect and promote human rights. In this role, I led the work of the Board in setting strategic priorities of the organization, monitoring the organization’s performance, and ensuring engagement with Amnesty Canada’s 60,000+ members and the broader community.

I am employed with the Ontario Clean Water Agency, the largest operating authority of water and wastewater facilities in Ontario, as a Human Resources Consultant. My educational experience includes a Masters degree in Industrial Relations from Queens University, and a Bachelor degree of Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo. In addition, I have attained the Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation, and the IAF Certified™ Professional Facilitator (CPF) designation.

I have experience working with civil society organizations, such as the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), Oxfam Canada, and Waterloo Public Interest Research Group. In 2016, I was presented with OPSEU’s Region 5 Bread & Roses Award for my contribution in moving forward women’s issues.

It would be an honour to serve on the Equal Voice Board of Directors and to continue to champion initiatives such as the Daughters of the Vote.
