Getting on the Ballot: EV to Host Workshop in Baddeck, Nova Scotia

May 17, 2013

As a follow-up to its highly successful workshop in Halifax, Nova Scotia, EV - a multi-partisan national organization with a mandate to promote more women in politics - is hosting another one for women in the Cape Breton region.

Scheduled for Saturday, June 1st at the Inverary Inn in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, the workshop is designed to encourage and equip more women to actively consider running for office.   After the workshop, interested women can apply to be connected with a strategic advisor, i.e an experienced politician or party member who can lend their advice and insights to women candidates who may be newer to the process.

This workshop will share the insights of elected women active in politics as well as the advice of communications and campaign professionals.  Participants will gain some of the skills needed to win a party nomination or to stand for office at another level of government.

The workshops are free of charge, but advance registration by  Friday,  May 31 at noon is required.

The last provincial election of 2009 saw the number of women in the House go from nine to twelve but Louise Carbert, Political Science professor at Dalhousie University, reminds us that we cannot take any further increases for granted.

“The only way to elect more women is to recruit more women to run for office. In the 2009 provincial election, few women were candidates: seventeen for the NDP, ten for the Liberals, and seven for the PCs. That’s not enough in a province that has fifty-two MLAs.”

Women are welcome to attend who are currently not involved in a political party or who may be thinking of running for municipal council or their local school board.

"Many of the skills women need to build a winning campaign are applicable across the board, regardless of the level of government.  Whether a women is thinking of running soon or several years down the road, this workshop is applicable to them."

Workshop funding and support has been provided due to the generosity of Equal Voice's many sponsors, Status of Women Canada and the NS Advisory Council on the Status of Women.

“Providing that this initiative proves successful,  EV hopes to follow up on this event with other workshops in other parts of the country,” added Nancy Peckford, Executive Director of Equal Voice.
