Women's Representation in Saskatchewan Goes Down

Nov 01, 2011

WOMEN’S REPRESENTATION IN SASKATCHEWAN GOES DOWN

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Saskatoon: The results of Saskatchewan’s provincial election on Monday not only gave the Saskatchewan Party a stronger mandate but changed the face of the provincial legislative assembly when it comes to gender. The proportion of women representing Saskatchewan’s population dropped from 22 percent to 17 percent - with only 10 of 58 seats now held by women, compared to 13 previously.

The Saskatchewan Party now has 8 of 49 (16 percent) seats represented by women, while the New Democratic Party now has 2 of 9 (22 percent) female members.

Equal Voice Saskatchewan, EV’s newest provincial chapter established this past September, expressed its disappointment with the results but had been predicting a loss in representation because of the low numbers of women that were nominated.

“In a booming, otherwise progressive province, it is disconcerting to see women’s representation declining. Saskatchewan now sits in 8th place of 13 provinces and territories,” commented Monica Lysack, co-chair of Equal Voice Saskatchewan.

The Green Party was the most successful in recruiting women candidates to run in this past election: 25 of the 58 (43 percent) candidates the party fielded were women. The Saskatchewan Party had 9 women of 58 candidates (16 percent) on the ballot while 12 women (21 percent) ran under the New Democratic Party banner.

Heather McIntyre, Secretary of Equal Voice Saskatchewan and past candidate in a recent federal election, noted that “the United Nations says that a critical mass of at least 30 percent of women is needed before legislatures produce public policy representing women's concerns and before political institutions begin to change the way they do business.”

“And we are clearly not going in the right direction in Saskatchewan on this front.”

“It is important to understand that the focus of Saskatchewan’s Equal Voice chapter extends beyond Election Day,” added Lysack, Co-chair. “The real work begins now if we want to ensure that in the next provincial election, more women are contenders. It will require a commitment from all political parties to develop concrete strategies, not just simple words, to begin recruiting more women now.”

Equal Voice Saskatchewan will be promoting the increased participation of women and will be communicating with all political parties as they move forward.

“We will be inviting commitments from all political parties to set objectives, implement strategies and work together so Saskatchewan can become a leader in successfully recruiting and electing women,” remarked Monica Lysack.

“Saskatchewan is a leader in so many other areas, there is no reason we can’t lead in this arena too.”
