Ottawa:  As Premier Danny William leaves his post as Premier of the province, Equal Voice extends its congratulations to Kathy Dunderdale, former Deputy Premier, and wishes her every success in her new role as interim Premier.

Equal Voice also applauds the leadership of Yvonne Jones, Leader of the Liberal Party and Lorraine Michaels, Leader of the New Democratic Party.

“Equal Voice Newfoundland and Labrador is delighted that our province has become the first province in Canada’s history in which the leaders of all three major parties are women.

This is a testimony to the commitment of women in the province to making a difference in their communities,” stated Sheilagh O’Leary of Equal Voice Newfoundland & Labrador.

“It also underscores the confidence the electorate has in women candidates, female representatives and female leaders. Our challenge at this juncture is to attract and retain more women to the political process.”

As a national, multi-partisan organization with chapters across the country, Equal Voice monitors women’s participation at the federal and provincial/territorial levels.

In addition, through its Canada Challenge and related provincial challenges in Ontario and New Brunswick, it invites party leaders to commit to increasing the numbers of women nominated and elected.

In all three cases where Challenges have been launched, record numbers of women have run. In the 2008 federal election, nearly 29% of all federal candidates were women, a historic high for Canada at the national level.

In Ontario, in 2007, one year after Equal Voice launched its Ontario challenge, the number of women elected to the legislature rose from twenty-five percent to just over twenty-seven percent.  In New Brunswick, in the recent provincial election this past fall, 71 women ran for elected office representing a significant increase from the previous election.

Nancy Peckford, Executive Director of Equal Voice, and a native of the province who now lives in Ottawa, added her enthusiasm for this historic first.

Danny Williams has paved the way for Newfoundland and Labrador to reinforce the message that political leadership comes as naturally to some women as it is does to some men.

The fact that we have three strong and passionate women with diverse views and varying styles should put to bed the notion that women cannot or do not wish to lead."
