Female representation on councils growing

Sep 27, 2013

The municipal elections are now over and it’s interesting to look at the results, especially as it relates to women elected or acclaimed to town councils.

In the Bay St. George area, there is some strong female representation on some town councils, especially in Port au Port West-Aguathuna-Felix Cove, where the five-member council is all women. Stephenville Crossing also has strong female representation where four of the seven council members are women. Stephenville and Port au Port East each have two female council members, while Kippens and St. George’s each have one.

The trend is not exclusive, however, as Cape St. George has returned an all-male council, despite six women in the race this time around.

Much has been made about there being no women elected on St. John’s city council this time around with Coun. Sheilagh O’Leary, who was defeated in her bid to become mayor, called it a travesty to have no female representation.

Women certainly add a lot to the mix on a town council and through the years some very strong female leaders have made their voices and opinions known on different issues while sitting on town councils.

That continues today and women often look at some of the issues differently than men, especially when those issues involve their gender, so it helps to have that representation.

The Rotary Club is an example of a community organization that eventually opened its membership to women and today is no longer looked upon as an “old boys club.” In fact, the Stephenville Rotary Club now has more women than men, as 12 of the 17 members are female.

It’s great to see statistics showing there is a growing representation of women on municipal councils but we still have a long way to go.
