OTTAWA, ON – September 24, 2025 – As Parliament resumes and Canadians observe Gender Equality Week, Equal Voice is renewing its call for bold, measurable action to achieve gender parity in politics.
Lindsay Brumwell, Interim Executive Director of Equal Voice, is on Parliament Hill this week meeting with parliamentarians and staff from all parties. Her message is clear: the time for symbolic gestures has passed — Canadians deserve a Parliament that reflects the full diversity of the country. And the work to achieve this goal must happen now, not only when the next election or by-election is called.
“While the most recent federal election recently concluded, there is always another election ahead,” said Brumwell. “If we want real change, the work to improve gender equity at the federal level needs to start today. Representation matters every day—not just on election day.”
That’s why Equal Voice continues to work to be a trusted partner for parties, governments and other key stakeholders in achieving this shared Canadian goal. Its 2025 national polling results show that 86 per cent of Canadians agree it is important to have women as elected representatives.
Through flagship campaign schools, training, networking opportunities, and awareness campaigns, the organization is actively addressing the barriers women and gender-diverse people cite as preventing them from running for office. These resources are available to women in all their diversity, supported by a national community of more than 15,000 Canadians who share a commitment to strengthening democracy through equitable representation.
“Equitable representation is not just about fairness— it makes for stronger institutions and better public policy,” Brumwell added. “With the right tools and support, more women and gender-diverse Canadians can step forward, compete, and lead.”
For more than two decades, Equal Voice has worked across Canada to train, mentor, and support women in politics, while producing research and advocacy that drive systemic and cultural change. As Gender Equality Week is celebrated nationwide, the organization is calling on political leaders to move beyond aspiration and work with us to make gender equity in politics the norm.
