EQUAL VOICE GAINS MULTIPARTISAN SUPPORT IN SASKATCHEWAN
Saskatoon, Monday, June 27, 2011: On Saturday, June 25, 15 men and women gathered in Saskatoon and Regina through teleconferencing to bring Equal Voice to Saskatchewan. Equal Voice is a not-for-profit organization created to push for the election of more women to all levels of government in Canada. Currently there are 10 local chapters in many regions of Canada and as a result of this past weekend’s Saskatchewan founding meeting, local steering committee members are working with the national office to make Saskatchewan the eleventh chapter.
Canada's international ranking on women's political representation has fallen to 40th in the world. Despite enjoying economic prosperity and political stability, Canada now has fewer women elected to parliament than Rwanda, Iraq and Afghanistan.
“The United Nations says that a critical mass of at least 30 per cent of women is needed before legislatures produce public policy representing women's concerns and before political institutions begin to change the way they do business,” comments Danielle Chartier, co-chair of the Equal Voice Saskatchewan chapter and MLA for Saskatoon Riversdale “Currently, 25 per cent of members of the Canadian House of Commons are women and in Saskatchewan, 22 per cent of members in the Legislature are women.”
The Equal Voice Saskatchewan chapter founding meeting brought together multi-partisan individuals including elected officials, students and politically interested individuals. “We recognized that women still encounter a number of barriers when seeking elected office,” explains Monica Lysack, co-chair of the Equal Voice Saskatchewan chapter and federal candidate in the last election. “But it has been demonstrated that political will and commitment from party leaders makes a difference.”
The newly formed Saskatchewan chapter of Equal Voice is planning for its inaugural provincial event to take place this fall in Saskatoon. “Equal Voice chapters aim to increase public awareness about the under-representation of women in politics and why this matters by hosting events, providing networking and mentoring opportunities, and organizing campaign training schools,” states Laura Ross, VP of Membership and Outreach of the Equal Voice Saskatchewan chapter and MLA for Regina Qu’Appelle Valley. “It really comes down to having a Saskatchewan strategy on how you and I can support a woman in politics, or how a women can be that woman in politics if she wants to.”
