At the rate we are going
ONE HUNDRED and SEVENTEEN Years is how long
it will take for women to achieve equity in the Canadian House of
Commons. That's 4 generations. At the rate we are going,
it won't be until our great, great granddaughters are women that
we'll have 50/50 in the House. It will be 2118.
Here's how the math works: We elected the first woman,
Agnes McPhail in 1921. We now have 62 women. It took 80 years to
elect an additional 61 women. That's a rate of .7625 women a year.
In order to have gender equity we would need 151 women in the house.
That means an additional 89 women. At the rate of .7625 women per
year, it would take 116.7 years to get 151 women elected.
In 1943, Agnes MacPhail was one of two women first
elected to the Ontario provincial parliament. Today, there are 18
women elected to Queen's Park. At that rate, it will take 123 years
to get half the Ontario legislature.
The first woman mayor was elected in 1951. At that
rate, it will take us 165 years to achieve gender equity at the
municipal level (that is mayors, reeves, wardens, not councillors).
It will be 2166.
Watch for updates on the facts that prove our case.
Women in Canada are being left behind in the struggle for political
equality. We'll keep you up to date on what's happening to women's
voices in Parliament, legislatures and municipal councils across
Canada.
We'll also post useful studies and news we can gather
of trends for women in politics in the United States, Europe and
around the world. Tips, and contributions, most welcome.
