    Equal Voice was invented to help change the four-men-to-one-woman ratio in politics.

    Experiences is one of the ways we're aiming to do that.

    We figure just because you've never before imagined what a great mayor, member of parliament or health minister you could be, doesn't mean we can't give you the opportunity to try the idea on for size!

    In some countries, as many women are elected to public office
    as men. Why there and not here?

    What seems to make a difference is when girls are encouraged at a young age to learn about how our democratic system works and understand how politics affects their lives.

    You can't imagine a future that you don't know anything about.
    So Experiences was invented to let you try politics on for size.

    EXPERIENCE:

    It looks good on a resumé, boosts confidence and shows up in the lines on our faces as we age.

    The dictionary defines experience as the knowledge and skill we gain by being included in, exposed to or having
    direct contact with activities, events or people over a period of time. Our lives are a collection of experiences and
    the sense we make of them.

    In the movie Australia, Hugh Jackman's character, the
    Drover, puts it this way to Lady Ashley, played by
    Nicole Kidman: "In the end all you own is your story .
    I'm just trying to live a good one."

    (Then again, Oscar Wilde, Irish playwright, wit and
    celebrity of the late 19th century claimed:
    "Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes"!)

    Equal Voice is dedicated to ensuring that women's and girls' experiences - and our ideas,
    attitudes and concerns - have an impact on the decisions that politicians make on our behalf.

    This is where you come in.

    Here's what we're planning to do:

    • MEET YOU where you live in lively public forums;
    • ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS about politics, government, democracy,
      the way it all works, how you're affected, and why you should care;
    • LISTEN TO YOUR IDEAS about what's important, what you'd like
      to see changed, how we can engage more young people in public life;
    • EXPOSE YOU TO SOME INTERESTING SPEAKERS who will share their
      personal stories of political life and why they recommend it;
    • MATCH YOU UP WITH MENTORS who will play a more active personal
      role in supporting you to pursue the kind of political involvement that suits you best.

    What's in it for you?

    By the end of the process, you'll have been able to:

    • Hang out with some amazing women of all ages;
    • Acquire some great stories to tell your friends;
    • Learn a lot of fascinating things about how the world works;
    • Look at your skills, interests and goals in a different light;
    • Develop an increased sense of your own power and how you can use it to
      make a difference in the lives of others; and maybe even become Prime Minister
    • Imagine what it would feel like to serve as a leader in your own community or country.

    . and who knows where that will lead?!
