September 2010
  • EVAN Chapter Meeting held Thursday, September 16.
  • EVAN assisted the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Project Director for Women in Municipal Government in e-marketing a 2-day municipal campaigning workshop held on Sept. 13 and 14 in Edmonton. The workshop was open to women in Edmonton region running in municipal elections, including school board trustee candidates.
July and August 2010
  • Chapter Chair wrote, two EVAN members edited and the Chapter Executive reviewed an article submission “Be Her or Support Her” on women in politics and women in business to Womanition Magazine for publication in their annual edition.  Article available on-line September 15th at http://womanition.com

June 2010

  • EVAN organized and hosted “Run Like A Woman: Be Her or Support Her”, an evening workshop covering campaign fundamentals for women considering running for municipal council or school board trustee and for anyone interested in volunteering on a woman’s campaign. 32 women participated.
Equal Voice was proud to present a distinguished panel of politically savvy women to share their valuable insights gained on the campaign trail. Along with Alayne Sinclair from the Office of the City Clerk, former Edmonton City Councillor Janice Melnychuk, retiring Edmonton Public School Board Trustee Sue Huff, and former Ward 4 campaign manager Sarah Crummy  each gave practical answers on how to:
    - understand campaign legislation and rules, including the recent changes
    - budget for and finance a campaign
    - build and sustain a campaign team
    - work effectively with media.
Dr. Jane Arscott co-author of Still Counting: Women in Politics Across Canada, moderated the lively panel and contributed greatly. Participants met with panel members in roundtable discussions following their presentations.
  • An EVAN Executive member participated in an open discussion forum entitled 'Political Reform in Canada: Can Parliament, the Senate and the Electoral System be changed?' hosted by Artem Medvedev, Edmonton-Leduc NDP. Doug Bailie of Fair Vote Alberta, Chris White of Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament were panellists. Larry Booi of Public Interest Alberta and Janet Buckmaster EVAN Chair were in attendance.
    - EV supports electoral reforms that level the playing field for women i.e. finance reforms
    - EV prefers voluntary party quotas for nominations (i.e. EV’s Canada Challenge)
    - Senate reform is not a part of Equal Voice mandate; however EVAN addressed that by asking what would Senate reform (i.e. elected Senate) mean for Canadian women? A question worth asking because proportionally more women sit in the Senate than any other legislative body. Would electing Senators affect the numbers of women in future?
    - The EVAN member also spoke to the need for a shift in culture in Parliament with a goal of parity and a minimum of 33% elected women.
  • Local CBC TV covered the "New Kids on the Political Block" event, hosted by InterVivos. Three EVAN chapter members attended. Speakers were Alberta Party rep Chima Nkemdirim, and Wildrose Alliance leader Danielle Smith, discussing what their parties are doing to engage youth.
    - CBC reporter Kim Trynacity's mention of women in politics - due to question asked by Equal Voice Alberta North Chair Janet Buckmaster about their (AP and WA) parties' policies/committment to increasing number of women running.
    - Moderator Nicole Martel, positioned between Chima and Danielle - wore  the black Equal Voice button "Elect More Women" - caught on cameras. A supporter of more women in politics, Nicole was "pinned" by Equal Voice just before the cameras started rolling. (She also kept the button).
    - Two other EVAN Executive members attended, tweeting the event.

May 2010

  • Ongoing planning meetings and tasks for EVAN’s June event: “Run Like A Woman: Be Her or Support Her.”
  • Other discussions: May 2010 issue of Alberta Views magazine featured Alberta MP Linda Duncan on the cover as Alberta's 'maverick' politician. Other significant content included Shannon Phillip's full article on the Glass Ceiling for Women in Alberta. Shannon is on the board of Womanspace Resource Centre in Lethbridge.

April 2010

  • EVAN chapter’s historic meeting between EVUA (U of A youth chapter on campus), Beki Scott – VP Equal Voice National Board & National Youth Chair, and EVAN - the first time 3 branches of EV met together in Alberta.
  • Equal Voice Chairs Janet Buckmaster (Alberta North) and Janice Kinch (Alberta South) along with visiting National Vice-President Beki Scott participated in the Calgary “Dialogue on Democracy” and group discussion on "Should Voting be Compulsory?" sponsored by the Famous Five Foundation, with the Sheldon Chumir Foundation for Ethics in Leadership, with debaters Lisa Young and Steve Patten, both professors, with Poli Sci depts of U of C and U of A respectively.
  • EVAN chapter Executive arranged for and purchased  5 "Elect More Women" black laminated posters, based on the black “Elect More Women” buttons - look fabulous and are useful for events, conferences.
  • EVAN table at the Senior Women's Academic Association of Canada conference of female Deans and female senior academic administrators from across Canada, including a woman from NB who is a member of EVNB and another from EVNS. To women not familiar with Equal Voice, the current Chair Janet Buckmaster and a former EVAN Chair talked up EVAN, EVUA, EVAS and the other chapters, including campus youth chapters across the country. On the laptop were EV’s Experience’s videos of elected women. We encouraged Senator Claudette Tardif to give us a plug during her Friday keynote speech, which she did. Distributed EV postcards, membership forms. Anne McLellan's keynote on Saturday included describing the work of Equal Voice in promoting the election of more women to government.

  • Linda Duncan –NDP MP Edmonton-Strathcona signed on as an EV mentor with Experiences.

February 2010

 January 2010

  • Chapter meeting: Internal structural changes, based on September strategic discussion decisions – move from steering committee to transitional Executive structure until future AGM. Adapted University Model, chosen because of: the distinct responsibilities for each committee, including those with youth groups, and the structure makes protocol for communication with National and with the media more clear, aligns with EVAS on campus.
  • Famous 5 Society/Enbridge's "Celebrating Women in Leadership" Luncheon: Cathy Olesen, Mayor of Strathcona County was guest speaker - Cathy running again for mayor. Great opportunity to talk up Equal Voice & distribute EV postcards.  Two members of the EV University of Alberta chapter attended the event. Strathcona County Mayor Cathy Olesen mentioned EV and had EVAN Chair wave to the crowd. Following, editor of Womanition Magazine approached EVAN Chair to write an article for annual Womanition magazine which highlights women in business, due out just before Alberta municipal elections.

Activities and Events from July to October 31, 2009

Equal Voice discussion with Alberta Liberal Senators

EVAS chapter chair Janice Kinch, Lana Cuthbertson representing Equal Voice – U of A chapter and Janet Buckmaster accepted an invitation to meet for discussion in August with Alberta Liberal Senators Grant Mitchell and Tommy Banks about the multi-partisan approach of Equal Voice. EV representatives used the opportunity to discuss EV’s goals of promoting the election of more women in government through our on-line campaign school, our Experiences mentorship program of young women, our Canada Challenges initiatives, and working collaboratively with others.

Strategic discussion day for EVAN

In September EVAN members led by seasoned facilitator Shelley Williams revisited the mission and purpose of Equal Voice, with a thoughtful view of the future to balancing the activities of Equal Voice that educate and raise awareness, with chapter sustainability and local volunteer passion and engagement.

Women in Municipal Government

Former EVAN Chair Tania Kajner and Equal Voice Alberta South Chair Janice Kinch presented on September 17th to the Women in Municipal Government committee of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association. The members of the Committee were keenly interested in the work of Equal Voice, and expressed an interest to explore ways in which the WIMG Committee and Equal Voice Alberta North & South can work together in future.

Dinner with Sylvia Bashevkin, author of Women, Power and Politics

U of T Professor Dr. Sylvia Bashevkin, in Edmonton October 6-7, 2009 to speak on her latest work on women’s political representation, “Women, Power, Politics: The Hidden Story of Canada’s Unfinished Democracy” was the guest at a “Dinner and Discussion” organized by Kirsten Snell, chair of Equal Voice’s University of Alberta chapter. Bringing together women from a variety of backgrounds, including students, professors, EVUA and EV Alberta North members, and elected officials to discuss the issues and solutions proposed in Bashevkin’s book, the well-attended informal discussion provided the opportunity to give feedback to Bashevkin on how they perceive the “Women+Power=Discomfort” equation noted in the book and to debate the impact solutions like electoral reform would have on women’s representation in Canada.

ChangeCamp Edmonton

The theme of the October 17 event “How do we re-imagine government and citizenship in the age of participation?" stimulated dialogue with engaged citizens, policy experts, academics, new-media users, political organizers, elected decision-makers and others. EVAN member Ashley Casovan proposed on behalf of Equal Voice: 'How can we use technology to support female candidates and elect more women?" About 35 people attended Ashley’s session - great attendance since there were 5 other sessions happening at the same time. Brava! Informal notes taken during the session can be viewed by following this link.

EV’s Experiences Program

EVAN chapter members and members from University of Alberta EV Youth Chapter worked together to facilitate EV’s Experiences youth consultations with Western Youth Coordinator Amanda Rheaume during the Alberta Girl Guides’ ‘mock Parliament’ weekend. This event followed EVAN chapter’s successful youth consultations for EV’s Experiences program in March, with Nellie McClung all girls school at Avonmore site, and the EV University of Alberta chapter consultations on campus.

BC Women’s Campaign School

Recognizing the value of BC’s Women’s Campaign School run by the Canadian Women Voter’s Congress, and with 2 EVAN members having attended in 2003 and the other in 2007, one current EVAN chapter member attended the March 2009 School and reported back to the chapter. This has prompted further discussion amongst EVAN chapter members to think longer term to sponsoring a woman in future who is interested in running for office.

Chapter chair interviewed by U of A student

EVAN chapter Chair Janet Buckmaster was interviewed by political science student from University of Alberta’s rural Augustana campus in Camrose, SE of Edmonton, as part of her university research project on women in politics in Alberta.

Women in municipal government

Equal Voice Alberta North, through one of its members, is working to create a relationship with the sub-committee of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) to increase women in municipal government. Discussion of this strategy resulted in excellent discourse on the difficulties of balancing political life and professional entrepreneurial dilemmas, including conflict of interest, in small communities when one is both a business woman and a (part-time) elected representative.

North and south chapters hold joint meeting

As a prelude to EVAN chapter’s fall 2009 strategic planning process, EV Alberta North and EV Alberta South chapters met together May 23rd for the first time, in Red Deer (central Alberta), to discuss areas of commonalities, strategies to increase Equal Voice’s profile in Alberta, strategies for increasing public awareness of EV’s goals and opportunities to work together during provincial and federal elections.

YWCA Edmonton’s Tribute to Women of Distinction Award

EVAN member and Ophelia’s Voice founder Joanne Cave was honoured as the Youth (under 18) recipient of YWCA Edmonton’s Tribute to Women of Distinction award, with EVAN members cheering her on at the event.

Alberta provincial elections

The Alberta chapters provided congratulatory letters to all Edmonton-region female candidates. To increase visibility of Equal Voice and the need for more women in politics, the Alberta North Chapter created signs and conducted "Waves for Women" event on busy street corners the last Saturday prior to the election. Volunteers included EV members and local Girl Scout members waving our new EV signs. The Chapter also generated a news release regarding increase in number of women elected to Alberta Legislature from 14.4% to 19%.
